Former Valencia and Celta Vigo defender Fernando Caceres has been involved in a shooting in his native Argentina as he attempted to thwart a gang of criminals who attempted to steal his car.
Police sources from the South American nation suggest that Caceres, who also enjoyed spells with River Plate and Boca Juniors during a 20-year career, had resisted the group but was shot several times, including in his right eye.
Spanish publication AS reports that the 40-year-old has undergone surgery but statements from the doctor in charge, Rodrigo Bau, suggest that his condition remains serious.
“He [Caceres] underwent a CT scan that confirmed the severity of the wound to his eye,” Bau commented, adding, “That coupled with the neurosurgery advice that we received meant we decided to undergo surgery immediately.”
Caceres made his debut in 1986 with Argentinos Juniors, before moving onto River Plate, and from there he moved to Europe and enjoyed a successful spell at Real Zaragoza.
After a brief stint back in his homeland, he spent two seasons with Valencia before making 198 appearances in six years with Celta Vigo. He ended his playing with Independiente and recently returned to his first club Argentinos in a coaching capacity.
